[18:40]  1 tn Heb “and [as for] my enemies, you give to me [the] back [or “neck”].” The idiom “give [the] back” means “to cause [one] to turn the back and run away.” Cf. Exod 23:27.

[18:40]  2 sn Those who hate me. See v. 17, where it is the Lord who delivered the psalmist from those who hated him.

[40:26]  3 tn Heb “Lift on high your eyes and see.”

[40:26]  4 tn The words “heavenly lights” are supplied in the translation for clarification. See the following lines.

[40:26]  5 tn Heb “the one who brings out by number their host.” The stars are here likened to a huge army that the Lord leads out. Perhaps the next line pictures God calling roll. If so, the final line may be indicating that none of them dares “go AWOL.” (“AWOL” is a military acronym for “absent without leave.”)

[63:1]  6 sn Edom is here an archetype for the Lord’s enemies. See 34:5.

[63:1]  7 tn Heb “[in] bright red garments, from Bozrah.”

[63:1]  8 tn The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis; note the first line of the verse.

[63:1]  9 tn Heb “honored in his clothing”; KJV, ASV “glorious in his apparel.”

[63:1]  10 tc The Hebrew text has צָעָה (tsaah), which means “stoop, bend” (51:14). The translation assumes an emendation to צָעַד (tsaad, “march”; see BDB 858 s.v. צָעָה).

[63:1]  11 tn Heb “I, [the one] speaking in vindication [or “righteousness”], great to deliver.”
